The Nigerian senate has expressed plans to investigate the
Circumstances that have led to delays in passport processing , leading to the delay of issuance, renewal of Nigeria International Passport by the Nigerian Immigration Services.(NIS)
This is as the upper chamber also mandated its committee on Interior to urgently investigate the printing contract of the passport pamphlet
Senate resolution follows the adoption of a motion on the ” Delay on issuance , renewal of Nigeria International Passport “by the Nigerian Immigration Services sponsored by Senator Uche Ekwunife(PDP-Anambra).
Ekwunife in her presentation said the delay in missions and renewal of Nigeria international passport by the Nigerian Immigration Service across the country has led to untold hardships for Nigerians, who need to travel out of the country
She further stated that that it has also become extremely difficult for passport to be processed across the entire Nigeria immigration offices in different states, expecialy Lagos, Abuja and PortHarcourt .
In his submission Senator Gershom Bassey (PDP-Cross-River), who seconded the motion said issuance of passport is a right of every Nigerian.
Also contributing Sen.Biodun Olujumi (PDP-Ekiti) said the motion was timely, adding that the country needs to go back to the days in the past when passport were issued within two to three days.
Senantor Muhammad Bulkachuwa (APC -Bauchi) while narrating his ordeal said he experienced a similar delay when he applied for a renewal of his passport .
According to him, it took five weeks for him to be issued his passport after his biometric exercise.
The Senate in its resolution mandated its committee to investigate the contract awarded for the printing of Nigerian passport and report back in two weeks
