Meet The Youngest Female Elected Politician

One of the dynamics of the 2023 general elections is the emergence of a 26year old fresh graduate of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Rukayat Shittu who won the Owode/Onire Constituency seat at the Kwara State House of Assembly.

As the youngest member-elect of the State House of Assembly, her emergence on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to have put the name of the humble Rukayat on the world map.

Born on 6th June 1996 into a humble family background in Manya community in Asa local government area of Kwara State, Rukayat Shittu is a graduate of Mass Communication from the National Open University of Nigeria, Ilorin Study Centre. She was a student representative in her undergraduate days as the first female Senate President of the Congress of Open University of Nigeria and a Publicity Secretary for a Pro-Democracy group known as “Kwara Must Change”.

Rukayat strongly believes in the concept of having youths in their twenties engaged in active governance like in the days of Nigerian foremost Nationalists like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo and Ladoke Akintola who made a clear difference in governance in their days .

Having polled a total of 7,521 votes to defeat her closest opponent, in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Yunus Abdulahi who is 39 years old and polled a total of 6,957 votes. Rukayat Shittu a Journalist and fashion designer turned politician said her passion for good governance led her into politics.
