November 14th of each year is designated Diabetes Day. It is a day set aside to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and what needs to be done, collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose.

Dr Ofem Enang,
Consultant Endocrinologist. University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Cross River State ,and the Nigeria Medical Association,
National Committee Chairman on Advocacy warned of 3 signs to watch out for ,in order not to fall victim of diabetes which is ravaging the World’s population.
Dr. Ofem Enang explained that a life of moderation,balanced diet and adequate exercise remain effective prevention to Diabetes.

The medical expert also touched on the role of education in the prevention of diabetes, especially in Nigeria where the ratio of Specialits to the population is grossly inadequate: 1 Specialist to 6,000 patients.
Dr.Ofem also warned against various herbal mixtures that cannot be verified. The theme of this year’s World Diabetes Day is: ” Access to Education”
